Make your own cleaning supplies.
The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, salt and soap. From stubborn stains around your house to general cleaning of tables and countertops, your own cleaning products don't include any harmful chemicals or additives. Cleaning a house naturally is not any more difficult than cleaning it with harsh chemicals. It improves indoor air quality and is much safer, especially for children.
This works on a number of different green accessory products that you might enjoy. Making your own cleaning products saves money, time and is honestly a lot of fun!
Skip on Bottled Water
The convenience of bottled water is understandable. It is so easy to buy a case of 24 water bottles and just recycle it when done. Many of these bottles then end up in the garbage, the oceans and our forests. There are a variety of other reusable options available such as reusable water bottles that can re-used thousands of times and are honestly much better than the flimsy water bottles anyways.
Opt for more energy efficient light bulbs!
Purchase The Right Light Bulb. Don’t run out today and replace all of your light bulbs even though they are still working, but the next time one of your light bulbs burns out replace it with a more eco-friendly brand. For example, LEDs, use more than 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.
Energy.gov notes that by 2027 widespread use of LEDs could save about 348 TWh of electricity, the equivalent of annual electrical output of 44 electric power plants (1000 megawatts each). It’s also a total savings of more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices. Plus, they are brighter, which means you might able to get away with using less lamps in your home!
Conserve water at home
You don't realize it, but you spend a huge amount of water in your home on a daily basis. Even casually reducing the amount of water that you use can help save you both money and the environment. For example, you should turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Water comes out of the average faucet at 2.5 gallons per minute. Don’t let all that water go down the drain while you brush! Turn off the faucet after you wet your brush, and leave it off until it’s time to rinse.
Other options (although these do include upfront costs) include Aerating your faucets, investing in a low-flow toilet, choosing efficient shower heads, and opting for an energy efficient dishwasher and washing machine can add up to big water savings.
